Lampert merged Kmart with Sears in 2005, forming Sears Holdings Corporation, hoping to achieve synergies and revive both struggling retailers.

Unfortunately, the merger failed to deliver the anticipated results. Instead, Sears Holdings continued to struggle with declining sales, mounting debt, and store closures. The company's financial situation deteriorated further, leading to another bankruptcy filing in 2018. This time, the company was significantly smaller, and its future remained uncertain. After restructuring, Sears Holdings, renamed Transform Holdco LLC, emerged from bankruptcy, but Kmart's presence was dramatically reduced. Hundreds more Kmart stores were closed, leaving only a handful operational across the United States.

Today, Kmart's finance is intertwined with that of Transform Holdco. The company's revenue is a fraction of what it once was, and its financial performance remains under pressure. While some Kmart stores still exist, they face intense competition from larger, more financially stable retailers like Walmart, Target, and online marketplaces like Amazon. The remaining Kmart stores generally operate with leaner staffing and reduced inventory levels compared to their heyday.

Looking forward, Kmart's financial future is precarious. The company needs to innovate and find a niche to attract and retain customers. A focus on underserved markets or a unique product offering could potentially provide a path to sustainability. However, overcoming the legacy of past failures and competing in the current retail landscape will be a significant challenge for Kmart and its parent company.
